learnerships

what is a Learnership?
Learnerships are new paraprofessional and vocational education and training programmes. They combine theory and practice and culminate in a qualification that is registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).

A person who successfully completes a Learnership will have a qualification that signals occupational competence and which is recognized throughout the country.

As a fully accredited ISETT SETA Training Provider, IT Intellect has successfully delivered 100s of IT Learnerships to date on behalf of dozens of Workplace Providers around South Africa. The true impact of such programmes, however, is best expressed through the testimony of the learners themselves…

"If there are more of these programmes in the country, it will make a huge difference to the economy..." - IT Support Technician Learnership Learner

"The programme gave us skills, which equipped us for life..." - IT Learnership Learner

Over the past six years, IT Intellect has developed a Learnership Delivery Infrastructure second-to-none in all regions of South Africa.

To date, IT Intellect has successfully delivered and managed literally hundreds of IT related Learnerships, including the following:
  • National Certificate in Information Technology - Technical Support (Lvl 4)
  • National Certificate in Information Technology - Systems Development (Lvl 4)
  • National Certificate in Information Technology - Systems Support (Lvl 5)
  • National Certificate in Information Technology - Solutions Development (Lvl 5)

Generally, the 12 month Learnership programme is split into 2 month periods. With 2 months at IT Intellect, where learners receive their technical and soft skills training. Then, 2 months in the workplace where they acquire practical experience.

This cycle repeats itself 3 times over the 12 month period, with the learners spending a total of 6 months of the learnership at IT Intellect on the training aspect, and 6 months in the workplace practically applying their skills. Ongoing assessments are used to evaluate performance, and this continues during the workplace component.

All practical projects and assessments are provided to the employer by IT Intellect, and our qualified assessors are there to mentor the students and employers through the entire process. IT Intellect offers Learnership training to all companies wishing to do IT Learnerships.

A person who successfully completes a Learnership will have a qualification that signals occupational competence and which is recognized throughout the country.

characteristics of a learnership
  • It must be clustered to provide for fundamental, core and elective learning
  • It must be demand led
  • It is a tripartite agreement between a learner, employer and training provider
  • It must reflect skills shortages
  • It must take note of qualification structures

how does it work in practice? Employers enter Learnership agreements with learners and providers. They can be both large and small employers and a group of employers might join together to provide Learnerships. In most cases an employer will provide the practical part of the Learnership and a training and education provider, for example, IT Intellect, will offer the learning part of the total programme. The Learnership Agreement which employers enter with each learner, will spell out the duties & obligations of the employer, the learner and the training provider.
